The host Alex Trebek was diagnosed by stage 4 pancreatic cancer 3 months ago.
Trebek has good news to share, He’s in ‘near remission,’ according to doctors.
It’s kind of mind-boggling, the 78-year old states, in PEOPLE’s latest cover story. Although cancer has a 9 per cent survival rate, Trebek has been responding very well to chemotherapy. “The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory… some of the tumours have already shrunk by more than 50 per cent.”
Trebek tells he’ll still have to go through several more rounds of chemotherapy to hopefully take into full remission, but he’s elated at how far he’s come.
He got emotional when he heard of the good news. “But they were tears of joy, not tears of depression”, he says.
Trebek has been honest regarding experiencing moments of deep sadness throughout the past three months.
As for why he thinks he’s doing so well with the chemotherapy, which has left him weak plus occasionally depressed, he mostly believes well wishes from fans and friends around the world.
“I’ve got a couple of million people out there who have expressed their good thoughts, their positive energy directed towards me and their prayers,” he states. “I told the doctors, this has to be more than just the chemo, and they agreed it could very well be an important part of this.”
“I’ve got a-lot of appreciation out there headed in my way and a bunch of prayers, and I will never ever lessen the value of that”. He stated.
