Dr. Ohsumi, a Japanese who was born in 1945 in Fukuoka, Japan and obtained a Ph.D. in the University of Tokyo in 1974 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology on Monday for the discoveries on how cells recycle their content, which the process knew autophagy a Greek term “self-eating.”
During starvation, cells break down nonessential components and proteins to reuse them for energy.
The cells also use autophagy to kill invading viruses and bacteria, sending them off for recycling. The process is thought to go awry in infectious diseases, immunological diseases, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
